Oremus - July / August 2014 Edition

Contents: Welcome to the online FREE edition of Oremus! The July / August issue is dedicated to the memory of all those men, women and children who died during the tragic horror of the First World War, and includes a special article on Westminster Cathedral during the Great War, as well as many other articles on the War. Also in this edition: The Queen's Head Coachman and the Cathedral; The Mysteries of County Meath - The Newgrange Monument; Our Sister Cathedral in London: St Paul's; PLUS all our regular pieces (Catholic Poets, Icon of the Month, Reviews, Historical Photo, Treasure of the Month, etc), as well as lots of other articles and Cathedral features, history, photos, news, diary, events and much MORE inside!

Please note that it came to our attention after the magazine had gone to print that the priest shown in the centre of the cover image is in fact Fr George L Craven (not George L C Raven as stated inside). Fr Craven later became Bishop Craven and was an auxiliary bishop of Westminster for many years. He died in 1967. During the First World War, he was mentioned in dispatches and was also awarded the Military Cross and was a made knight of the Legion d'Honneur for his services to France. We apologise for not realising that it was the future Bishop Craven in the picture before going to print and will publish an article in his honour in a later edition.

Oremus is the monthly magazine of Westminster Cathedral. It is produced by one of the Cathedral Chaplains, Fr John Scott, who is the editor, assisted by a team of volunteers. It seeks to reflect the vibrancy of Catholic faith as lived in the heart of London.

In December 2013 Oremus became a FREE publication and as such is now one of the most widely read Catholic magazines in the UK. It is also widely read throughout the world.

Donations towards our running costs are gratefully received, either at the Oremus stand at the back of the Cathedral or by post (cheques made payable to 'Oremus'). We also welcome sponsorship and are very grateful to those who advertise with us.

As well as special features by well-known authors and people connected to the Cathedral, Oremus also offers background knowledge to the life of the Cathedral, articles by Cathedral chaplains, news of The Friends, the day-to-day life of the Choir School and St Vincent de Paul School, Spiritual writing, articles on Cathedral art, and the monthly diary. Details are given of special celebrations, the music for Mass and organ recitals.

Contributions, Donations and Sponsorships

If you think that you would like to contribute an article or an item of news, or make a donation towards the running costs of the magazine, or offer sponsorship for Oremus, please contact the Editor, who will be very glad to hear from you.

Oremus always needs volunteer help week by week. Basic office and administrative skills will be greatly appreciated. If you have the time and talent to join a thriving and friendly team, please contact Canon Christopher Tuckwell on 020 7798 9055 or contact the Oremus office (same telephone number).
