Matthew Martin

Assistant Master of Music, Matthew Martin.

Matthew Martin was born in 1976 and read music at Magdalen College, Oxford where he was organ scholar. He then went on to the Royal Academy of Music, London as a post-graduate student and subsequently continued his studies in Paris with Marie-Claire Alain. He was recently elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) and is a teacher of keyboard skills and organ improvisation there.

In 2000 Matthew was appointed Organist and Choirmaster at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin and Assistant Organist at New College, Oxford before moving to Canterbury Cathedral in 2002. During his time there he directed a series of concerts in the cathedral including Bach’s St John Passion, the Christmas Oratorio (on period instruments) and Britten’s St Nicolas, as well as playing for the enthronement of Dr Rowan Williams as Archbishop (2003).

Since 2004 he has been Assistant Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral where he acts as an accompanist for broadcasts, tours and recordings, gives regular organ recitals and frequently directs the choir. During his time as Acting Master of Music in the summer term of 2008, he directed a rare and highly acclaimed recording for Hyperion of Victoria’s Missa Gaudeamus with the cathedral Lay Clerks. "A stunning disc that will become the new benchmark in this repertoire" - "The choral blend is superb and exquisitely balanced" Gramophone, September 2009

Matthew is becoming increasingly well known as a composer of fresh and vibrant choral music, and his works are performed by many renowned choral groups including the Cardinall’s Musick and BBC Singers. Recent commissions have come from the choirs of Westminster Abbey, Ampleforth Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral, and he is currently published by Faber Music in their new Choral Signature series. “His works...proved genuine intensifications of the Holst-Britten tradition of choral writing” The Independent, December 2004

In 2006, Matthew took up the position of director of the Nave Choir of boys and men as part of the annual Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy.
