Attracted by Christ

This Sunday we begin reading the sixth chapter of the Gospel according to John, which will accompany us till the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time. Now I have the benefit of experience to be only a little wiser than I was some eighteen years ago when, as part of my seminary formation, I had to serve in a small parish community during the summer vacation. Inexperienced, oblivious to the fact that this chapter of John ran for five weeks and wanting to make a good impression with my first reflection at Mass I said everything that I could possibly think of the day’s Gospel reading and, indeed, of the whole of John 6. Can you imagine my feelings when it hit me the next day that I had said in one Sunday what I should have said in five?

We continue to expand the range of product in our gift shop which relates to or echoes the art and architecture of the Cathedral. Recent such editions are glass roundels which replicate in glass images, typically mosaics which can be seen in the Cathedral. The image of Our Lady of Walsingham which adorns the side of the pulpit in the Cathedral is a good example of this.
