Gold Darkness and Light

The new books on display

On 18 November the eagerly
awaited publication of two new Cathedral books was celebrated
at a launch party in the Throne
Room of Archbishop’s House. Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor played host to a gathering of 200 people, who came to toast the arrival of Chapters of Gold: The Life of Mary in Mosaics, and From Darkness to Light.

Guests included celebrated photographer Gered Mankowitz
and Lady Rachel Billington - who worked together on Chapters of
Gold - members of the press and representatives from the publishing group Continuum. The event also marked the rebirth of Burns and Oates, which aims to be the premier publisher for catholic titles and is part of the Continuum group.

In Chapters of Gold, Lady Rachel relates the life of Mary using Mr Mankowitz’s detailed coloured photos of the mosaics in the Cathedral’s Lady’s Chapel.

Patrick Rogers, the author of From Darkness to Light, in conversation with Rebecca Thomas

Westminster Cathedral: From Darkness to Light is a collection of new and already published Oremus articles about the decoration of the Cathedral by Patrick Rogers. Robin Baird-Smith from Burns and Oates said he was delighted with the two books. He explained that, as a totally new project, Chapters of Gold had appealed to Burns and Oates because of the combined talents of "an author (Lady Rachel Billington) of the very first calibre, someone who was already extremely celebrated as a novelist, and Gered Mankowitz the most amazing and talented photographer". Mr Baird-Smith added that he expected to "sell a huge number of copies".

The idea for both books came from member of Oremus. Manyof the magazine’s team members worked voluntarily to help put the books together. They, in turn, are grateful to all those who supported their efforts.
