At Your Word, Lord

In the very early years of the Church’s history, St Ignatius, who was Bishop of Antioch and martyred around 110 AD, wrote to the church in Ephesus: ‘If the prayer of two people together has such a force, as Christ tells us in the Gospel, how much more does the prayer of the Bishop and all the church gathered with him’.

‘At Your Word Lord’ is a process of spiritual and pastoral renewal, which the Cardinal has asked the entire Diocese to join together with him, as a response to the Pope’s call for a new impetus in Christian living. At the Cathedral, this will give an opportunity for worshippers to:
• grow spiritually and deepen our prayer lives
• reflect on our faith and its practice in our daily lives
• review our roles as Christians in the world

‘At Your Word Lord’ will involve all in the Cathedral parish on a number of levels and in different ways:
• personally through prayer, meditation and spiritual reading
• by joining a small group to share in prayerful reflection of
scripture and on our faith
• as a worshipping community, through the liturgy, in our Sunday celebration of Mass

‘At Your Word Lord’ was formally launched at a Mass for the whole Diocese, celebrated at Wembley Arena on Friday 26 September. This was followed by a mission in the Cathedral held over 3 days in October.

The programme itself has begun this Autumn, and it is divided into 5 seasons of 6 weeks each, with each season taking place during periods of Lent and Autumn over the 3 years of the scheme. We hope that everyone who worships at the Cathedral, including our visitors, will feel encouraged to participate in the process in some way. Above all, we want to encourage people to join in, and if possible to help form and host small groups that will be the building blocks of a community reflecting together more deeply on its faith and Christian living.

With this in mind, forms are available for people to indicate whether they would be interested and prepared to join the groups in order to get a number established before the formal launch. Many people will be wondering how such groups might function in practice, and a good way of finding out is to come along to one of the existing groups that have been meeting to plan the programme’s launch. There is a core community, under Simon Jennings and an invitational team, under Mary Maxwell. Why not come along to one of their sessions and find out more about ‘At Your Word Lord’?
