Welcome to the Cathedral Parish

Behind the tranquil scenes of Westminster Cathedral is a parish bustling with life. There are many groups which meet to pray and socialise; others reach out to the poor and needy, like the St Vincent de Paul and The Passage day and night-shelter. The sacramental needs of the elderly, sick and housebound of those who live close-by are looked after by Cathedral staff who also arranges home visits by the Cathedral priests.

The Great Appeal for Westminster Cathedral was discussed at the Parish Meeting on 17 January 2008. Please click here to read the minutes.

The sacraments are at the very heart of Parish life, and a Cathedral Chaplain is always happy to advise about any preparation needed to receive them. The Cathedral's privileged position means that a priest is usually available for Confessions throughout most of the day, every day of the week. People come from miles around and so the queue is often long, but a tender heart and compassionate ear will always be found.

Many of our activities are due to the generous support and time given by our Guild of Volunteers who are always looking for new members. The Friends also support the Cathedral in fundraising for new projects, with social events regularly organised for its members. For insights into what's happening in the Parish don't forget to return to this website or subscribe to Oremus, the Magazine of Westminster Cathedral.

These are just a few examples of how the Cathedral Parish is teeming with life!

Questions you may have
Adding names to the Sunday Intercessions
If you wish to have somebody included among the sick or dead prayed for on a Sunday please contact Clergy House reception and leave details with the receptionist.

Mass intentions
If you wish to book a Mass intention please call at Clergy House reception. Masses to be said on a specific date require at least eight weeks notice. It should be noted that it is not our usual custom to read out a Mass intention at the beginning of a Mass unless this is pre-arranged.

The sick
In an emergency, when someone is gravely ill or has died, and a priest is required please contact Clergy House reception on 020 7798 9055. Outside reception opening hours please call 07854 174576.

If you or someone you know is going into hospital it is important to remember that hospital staff will not inform the Catholic Chaplain of your presence unless you specifically ask them to contact the Catholic Chaplain and request a visit. Saying you are Roman Catholic is not enough to secure a visit.

A new Healthcare section on the Diocese of Westminster's website provides information about the work of the Hospital Chaplaincy Service and a full listing of Catholic Hospital Chaplains. Click here for more details.

Funerals
Usually the undertaker engaged by a family or next of kin will contact the Cathedral to arrange a time and date. The undertaker should not commit to any time or date before consulting with the duty priest or another chaplain.
