Cathedral Life >

Homeless

The Cathedral has always placed a very high priority on helping the poor and homeless people in the area. The work of providing care services is carried out on its behalf by the following three chairitable organisations:

The Passage
The Passage provides day care services and a night shelter for single homeless people over the age of 25.

Two important appeals from The Passage:

Time to give? Opportunities for volunteers
Giving time can be fun, a way of meeting new friends and a very good way of donating to The Passage.
The Passage is heavily dependent on the kindness of many volunteers to provide essential services to homeless and vulnerable people.
Your time is greatly appreciated whether you are able to give on a regular basis or for one event a year. You choose the time you would like to give. Please see below for details.

Unwanted clothes, shoes or towels?

The Passage saves many thousands of pounds each year through as a result of people’s generosity and thoughtfulness. If you have used items like these (80% men’s, 20% women’s, with some life left in them), we would be most grateful to receive them:
Clothing T-shirts & sweat-shirts, fleeces & jumpers, jeans/corduroys/chinos, track suit bottoms, anoraks, bomber jackets, puffa jackets, leather or heavy coats, gillets/padded outdoor waist coats, gloves, hats, thick socks
Shoes Training shoes, walking shoes, boots (commonest sizes 8-10, but all useful)
Towels Do you keep the older towels, which you have replaced, in your airing cupboard. Could people using our showers benefit from them?

As a Cathedral parishioner and/or local resident you are in a unique position to contribute to your local community by giving time and talent to The Passage. Whilst carrying out practical tasks you can meet the homeless people using our services. Currently we have the following volunteer vacancies:
