Sunday June 10 - Premiere of Stephen Hough's Missa Mirabilis

Stephen Hough with autograph hunters

On Sunday June 10 the Friends hosted a reception to say thank you to Stephen Hough for his new Mass Missa Mirabilis. Family, friends and Westminster clergy gathered in the Clergy House Common Room to meet the composer and renowned pianist. Earlier in the week Stephen had taken part in an 'in conversation' with Radio 3 presenter Petroc Trelawny. Speaking at the reception Martin Baker, Master of Music, thanked the Friends for their support with a special mention for the Catholic Herald newspaper which had sponsored the Mass.

April 23 - St George's Day

On Shakespeare's birthday and the feast day of England's patron saint the Friends launched a £500,000 appeal for the mosaics of St George's chapel. Invited guests were thrilled to hear RSC actor Geoffrey Streatfield commence proceedings with the stirring Agincourt speech from Henry V. Other speakers included the writer and historian Clare Asquith who talked about Shakespeare's Catholicism and artist Tom Phillips designer of the mosaics. Clare will be coming back to the Cathedral in November to give a talk on the bard and his faith. Fundraising events for the chapel will be held over the coming months.

Friends celebrate 30th year

Eddie Brittain, the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk and Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor

Some 120 Friends of Westminster Cathedral marked the Society's 30th anniversary on 2 February with a reception and dinner at One Whitehall Place.

Guests included Friends president Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, and patron, the Duke of Norfolk, along with chairman, Eddie Brittain. They attended to mark the contribution of the Friends to supporting the Cathedral. Membership fees and attendance of events from parties to concerts helps support everything from hymn books, chairs and sound systems to the funding of mosaics and music.

The Duke of Norfolk recalled how his father, the first Friends' patron 30 years ago, arrived when the Cathedral roof had leaks and required urgent attention. He said: 'The Cathedral is now in good repair but it needs our support,' recommending we persuade our friends to join up as members.

Choristers' Annual Concert for the Friends

Towards the end of last year, the Choristers of Westminster Cathedral gave their annual concert for the Friends in the Throne Room at Archbishop's House. The audience was as ever thrilled by the performance of the boys and impressed by the stiff upper lip of Master of Music Martin Baker, who conducted the concert having broken his ankle two days earlier.
